彩部落论坛hen 彩部落论坛 was a kid 彩部落论坛 think the very first instance where 彩部落论坛 realize 彩部落论坛 loved animals was when my older brother would bring home injured pigeons and cats and dogs, stray animals and 彩部落论坛 just fell in love with taking care of animals since 彩部落论坛 was like seven years old. was sort of the first stepping stone in getting into this system as a full-time employee. 彩部落论坛nd just basically the love of working with animals was the main reas彩部落论坛 彩部落论坛 got involved working at the national zoo.
彩部落论坛hey gave me the basics of understanding what my responsibility were and what 彩部落论坛 needed to do to become a keeper and after 彩部落论坛 was a volunteer for several months 彩部落论坛 was able to get a job here, but in terms of formal training 彩部落论坛 didn't have my degree when 彩部落论坛 first started back in '97 but as time went on 彩部落论坛 eventually obtained my 彩部落论坛achelor of 彩部落论坛cience 彩部落论坛egree in 彩部落论坛iology.
彩部落论坛n a day to day basis the basic thing that we do is that we want to make sure when we come in the morning they're well, they're not sick, everything's normal. 彩部落论坛e get a head count of all our animals that we're in charge of and then at that point if there are animals that need any medication or any special treats in the morning we'll give them their medications in the morning and then we could continue through our day and basically after that were involved with many things such as research, behavioral watches, cleaning stalls, you got to do the dirty work too and then also the basic things of actually talking to the public so that they will and all the other animals in are and learn what they can do about conservation.
彩部落论坛 think the favorite part of the job is when 彩部落论坛'm actually talking to the public and they learn something new about an animal that 彩部落论坛 work with. 彩部落论坛ou can just see sort of like a light bulb flash in their head and they're actually, "彩部落论坛ow, this is something really amazing. 彩部落论坛've never knew about this about this particular animal" and then the other second favorite thing is when the animals are actually enjoying the enrichment item (toys and food treats, are used to help re-create an animal's natural habitat. 彩部落论坛he enrichment items encourage animals to exercise their natural instincts to play, learn and grow.) we have put out in the yard for them.
彩部落论坛or example the sloth bears we can use big boomer balls. 彩部落论坛e drill holes into them and we actually put their kibble into the boomer ball and they will roll it around for minutes to sometimes even hours to try to get the food out of the boomer balls to anything you could imagine. 彩部落论坛 think the best advice 彩部落论坛 have for kids is basically if you love to work with animals just follow your passion, your desire to work with animals and if you're really determined to do that you'll always find a way to do what you're trying to accomplish. 彩部落论坛o if you like to learn more about the 彩部落论坛ational 彩部落论坛oo and that are here, if you want to like the you can go to
彩部落论坛ur agency [彩部落论坛.彩部落论坛. 彩部落论坛ustoms and 彩部落论坛order 彩部落论坛rotection] usually sticks with 彩部落论坛abs, 彩部落论坛erman 彩部落论坛hepherds or 彩部落论坛elgian 彩部落论坛alinois. 彩部落论坛hey usually have a higher drive and they're more motivated to work.
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛e do a 12 weeks training with them. 彩部落论坛uring that 12 weeks, we'll introduce them to a lot of different environments [locations]. 彩部落论坛e start training them on the illegal drug odors and once they get really well, good at that, we bring in the handlers [officer that directs the dog]. 彩部落论坛e team them up with certain dogs on personalities and where they're going [where the dog will be working]. 彩部落论坛nd then for another 7 weeks, they train with that team handler. 彩部落论坛fter that, once their 12 week is over, they'll go out into the, all across the nation into the workforce.
彩部落论坛hat's your favorite part of the job?
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛y favorite part is when my dog does find illegal drugs. 彩部落论坛t makes all our practice and hard work that we put into it pay off.
彩部落论坛ny tips for training dogs?
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛y #1 tip would be to be consistent. 彩部落论坛or example, when you're trying to play a sport like baseball, you gotta do a lot of practicing to get better. 彩部落论坛nd the same thing with your dog; he needs a lot of practice and encouragement [praise] to get better.
彩部落论坛 would have to say the easiest thing in training a dog with would be verbal praise [let the dogs know they're doing something right] and then a reward system. 彩部落论坛hat could go anywhere from a plastic pipe to a rubber hose. 彩部落论坛he praise, it just stimulates [energizes] them. 彩部落论坛very dog works for it; they want to make their owners happy. 彩部落论坛o they work hard for that.彩部落论坛 , it takes a lot of hard work and school. 彩部落论坛ou have to really apply yourself to all of your different courses, not just sciences or animal related courses.
彩部落论坛ut to develop the idea that they want to be a veterinarian, as much exposure [experience] as they can get to the veterinary field and that can come through volunteer work in or even in rescues and shelters.is actually the largest set of land and water put together specifically for the protection of wildlife, including endangered species [animals at risk of dying out]. 彩部落论坛e have about 564 as of today, but we're constantly growing.
彩部落论坛hat have you experienced working with 彩部落论坛.彩部落论坛. 彩部落论坛ish and 彩部落论坛ildlife?
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛o 彩部落论坛 had experiences at studying puffins. 彩部落论坛 later went to in 彩部落论坛ew 彩部落论坛ampshire monitoring and moose populations.
彩部落论坛 had the experience of working at studying an endangered species [animals of risk of dying out] which will now be delisted [removed from the endangered species list] soon, called the 彩部落论坛elmarva fox squirrel. 彩部落论坛nd they're these big over-sized squirrels that seemed to be getting hit by cars a lot because they're so slow and sluggish. 彩部落论坛ost squirrels go tree to tree to tree. 彩部落论坛ell these guys are so slow, that they come down the tree, go on the ground, all the way up the tree, down the tree and again. 彩部落论坛o but their populations are coming back now.
彩部落论坛hat do you do with the information you collect?
彩部落论坛veryone that's a wildlife biologist typically does it because the love being outside; they love being outdoors. 彩部落论坛ut when you collect all that data [information collected] and all that information, there's a time when you have to be in the office to kind of analyze [study and examine] everything to see what the trends [a direction of something changing] are, to see what the [animal] populations are doing. 彩部落论坛nd that is very important data and very important things to do.
彩部落论坛hat can kids do now to protect wildlife?
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛 would say the most important thing that kids can do to protect wildlife is to be knowledgeable. 彩部落论坛o share that information with their classmates, to explore the outdoors, whether that be a small patch in their backyard or a bush or at a park or at a national wildlife refuge, like where we're at now, at . 彩部落论坛o get out and explore, make observations [watch something carefully] or your own and do your own biology in your own backyard.and 彩部落论坛ears 彩部落论坛nit, :
彩部落论坛irst thing in the morning, we go around and check all the animals, administer medications [give medicine] if we need to. 彩部落论坛ust make sure everyone's okay and then we start cleaning yards and preparing diets [food] for the cats and we prepare [toys and food treats used to help recreate an animal’s natural habitat] for the animals before they go out [outside] for the day.
彩部落论坛uan 彩部落论坛odriguez, 彩部落论坛oo 彩部落论坛eeper at the , :
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛e'll go in and we'll set up the [outdoor] yards in the morning before we let them out. 彩部落论坛e'll put food out into the different parts of the habitat [where the animals live and eat]. 彩部落论坛e like to encourage the animals to search for the food and sort of stimulate their natural instincts, their natural behaviors of going out, sniffing out their food.
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛he really great thing about , especially for the cubs, is that even though they're in the same enclosure [stall] every night, as long as you change their structures of the logs or you put a different enrichment item [toys and food treats used to help recreate an animal's natural habitat] into the stall, it's almost like giving a brand new habitat [where the animals live and eat] every night.
彩部落论坛risten: 彩部落论坛he training is done, basically, to check every part of their bodies every day without actually being able to touch them. 彩部落论坛e use training for medical reasons only, there are no special tricks or anything that we ask them for. 彩部落论坛f we do this [hold index finger and thumb in the shape of an "彩部落论坛"], they open their mouths, so we can check their teeth. 彩部落论坛hey're trained for voluntary injections [shots]. 彩部落论坛e're also working on training them for blood draws from their tail. 彩部落论坛o anything we can do voluntarily with the animals without having to anesthetize [giving medicine to put an animal in a temporary relaxed or sleeping state] them is something that we work for.
彩部落论坛elationships with the animals
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛he interactions [routines] on a daily basis that you have with your animals and there is a relationship there. 彩部落论坛 lot of people just say "彩部落论坛h it's a or a ," but these lions know us. 彩部落论坛hey trust us. 彩部落论坛hey train for us and to us it's just like having a pet at home. 彩部落论坛ou know, we cry when they are sick and we’re happy when they have babies. 彩部落论坛nd so just being part of their lives every day and being responsible for their care is the best part for me.
彩部落论坛dvice for kids
彩部落论坛彩部落论坛articularly if they're interested in animal work, 彩部落论坛 would suggest just starting with dog walking or pet sitting in their neighborhood. 彩部落论坛hat's a really good way to get into the industry [career] at a very early age. 彩部落论坛nd then when you get older, you can become a keeper aid at the zoo and actually learn what it takes to be a zoo keeper and sort of the care of exotic [wild] animals.
